Avila Beach was established in the late 19th century as a main fishing port for San Luis Obispo county. It is still a working fishing community but it's main source of income is tourism. A major oil spill under the town from Unocal storage facilities caused a shutdown of the town for many years. A $30,000,000 settlement from Unocal was used to rebuild the town. The contaminated soil was excavated and new top fill brought in. Most of the homes and buildings were torn down in the process. The newly rebuilt town is upscale with beautifully designed stores, restaurants and hotels and homes. What may be the prettiest stretch of beach along the central coast, an ideal micro-climate and a nearby golf course, Avila Beach is a growing and exciting place to visit or live. 

Inland just a few miles is the San Luis Bay Estates gated community with several different neighborhoods at various price ranges. The golf course runs along side it and there is a great marketplace at the base.

Just off the Avila Beach freeway exit is the Avila Valley Barn. It's a wonderful place for families to visit with fresh fruits and vegetables for sale, an ice-cream and candy shop, gifts, tables for picnicing and a number of animals that the kids can feed. Just ask one of the workers for food for the animals.
